Deciding What To Do

With so many options to choose from, pessimism can easily take hold of our actions and keep us from going after what brings us joy. Part of what stuns our decision-making process is the paralyzing amount of options available, partnered with confusion towards choosing something to focus our energy on. So the question arises, how do you decide what to do? I use general terms because the question can span a lifetime and simultaneously scrutinized to a moment. I would like us to approach our lives in segments to better aid a resolution to the question. Since our focus is limited it helps to answer the question of what to do in a way that best serves you in this period of your life. A committed decision should follow shortly. I think it’s also important to distinguish the difference between a decision and a choice or course of action. It begins with this basic premise: Do you select to believe the world is lost to evil and whatever impact you can make or have made is useless or destructive and therefore shouldn’t bother with the effort. Or do you choose to believe that your actions matter and will have a positive impact so you might as well get started now and put in the effort? People are made up of all kinds of stories and you get to choose the one you want to live out. When asked what should I do? Choose the story that supports living out your personal joys because those stories are the ones that make you feel alive. And what are we here for if it’s not to live?
